Título: The Obama secrecy trope, executive privilege, and Bush's imperial presidency
Publicado por: datou44a en Agosto 27, 2013, 04:50:14 am
Conservatives are now pushing the notion that President Obama has abandoned his promise to bring transparency and openness back to the White House after eight years of secrecy under the Bush administration. It's like saying baseball players who lift weights should be thrown in the same lot with A-Rod and the steroid freaks.
Obama promised during his campaign that he would post legislation publicly before signing it as a way to promote good government and accountability. When it came time to put this into practice, on the stimulus bill, Obama followed through. The bill appeared on the White House nfl jerseys (http://www.theprytania.com/jerseys.html) website last Friday, a few hours before Congress passed it.
As I noted in an earlier post, RedState.com ("He's cheap nike nfl jerseys free shipping (http://www.theprytania.com/jerseys.html) no friend of the common man!") counted up the days from the bill's passage in Congress to the president's signing:
The legislation was posted on WhiteHouse.Gov on Friday afternoon (at 2:05pm EST), but was not passed nfl jerseys cheap (http://www.ccrl.us/lip/cnj.html) until that night. So, let’s count the days: Saturday-1. Sunday-2. Monday-3. Signing on Tuesday. That’s three days, not five.
Counted another way, the bill was on the website for: 1. Friday 2. Saturday 3. Sunday 4. Monday 5. Tuesday. Five days.
Let's look at another example of Obama's alleged "secrecy." RedState blogger Pejman Yousefzadeh writes that Politico.com discovered some White House directives had not been released to the press, as is usually the case.
As it turns out, one of the directives that went missing turned out to be a proclamation recognizing American Heart Month. The ever vigilant Politico inquired about the missing directives and got this response from the White House:
Most of the documents were posted to the White House web site Tuesday night, after Politico inquired about their absence. “It was a simple oversight,” a spokesman, Ben LaBolt, said.
So, we see that Obama posted the stimulus bill for about four days instead of five, and the administration forgot to release that key proclamation about American Heart Month.
But Red State blogger Yousefzadeh questions: "why should anyone believe that these latest omissions stem merely from a 'simple oversight?'"
Holy hyperbole.
I wonder how many conservatives now attacking these minor transgressions jumped to the defense of President Bush, whose signature issue was preserving executive privilege and the divine right of kings.
Just take a stroll down memory lane with the interest group Public Citizen's website BushSecrecy.org.
One prominent example, of course, is the secret wiretap program Bush authorized after 9/11 that was only revealed in 2005.
Then there's the secret "black sites" CIA prisons overseas.
The secret Cheney Energy Task Force meetings.
The leaked identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame, a story that was kept secret from the White House Press Secretary.
Do we need to continue?
