Fox accused Labour of a "conflict of interest" and called for "transparency all round". Harvey Boulter, the businessman who met Fox in Dubai after Werritty set up a meeting, runs Porton Capital, which runs Cellcrypt, ytcgzx (http://www.ytcgzx.net/), and he used the meeting to discuss Cellcrypt business.? Labour's John Mann has written to the parliamentary commissioner for standards commissioner, John Lyon, asking him to investigate allegations that Fox allowed Werritty to live rent-free in a property funded by the taxpayer. Mann said: "In my view Dr Fox has allowed his friend to financially gain from the privileges that he has had access because he is a member of parliament. There is no reason for Dr Fox to wait and see what happens.
Photograph: Dan Callister 11.41am: Sir Richard Branson told the home affairs committee that the war on drugs had failed and that the government should deal with drug use as a health problem, not a criminal problem. He said this approach had worked in Portugal, where no one has been jailed for using drugs in the last 10 years.100,000 young people are arrested every year, and the figures are growing, for taking drugs. 75,000 of these young people are given criminal records. By actually moving drugs into the health department and not in the Home Office, if people have a problem, just like in Portugal, they should go in front of a panel to help them.Branson also said that 50% of his own generation and 75% of his children's generation has smoked cannabis.
This country has to wake up to the fact that children are being sexually abused in far greater numbers than was ever imagined. It could be going on in every type of community and in every part of the country.Too many local areas have failed to uncover the true extent of child sexual exploitation in their communities and failed to properly support victims and their families.Child sexual exploitation is child abuse, it is not good enough that some local areas don't recognise it as an issue. This is an extremely serious crime and must be treated as such, with the perpetrators pursued more vigorously. We need to make going to court much easier for the young victims and their families. It is worrying that many incidents go unreported because victims are unwilling to come forward.
Cable put it like this: "There has to be a tax measure in place which makes it absolutely clear that the wealthiest people in the country are making a contribution." (See 9.19am and 11.36am? Danny Alexander, the chief secretary to the Treasury,www.ytcgzx.net (http://www.ytcgzx.net/), has announced that the government will "kick start developments that are currently stalled", he said. (See 1.05pm.)? Alexander also announced that the government will step up its efforts to recover money being lost through tax evasion and tax avoidance by setting up a new "affluent team" in HM Revenue and Customs. Officers in the team will target the 350,kate spade outlet online (http://www.cnnhkids.com/),000 wealthiest taxpayers. (See 1.05pm.)? Hugh Grant, the actor, has criticised Scotland Yard for using the Official Secrets Act to try to force the Guardian to reveal details of how it obtained information about phone hacking.
? He strongly committed himself to reform of the Lords, describing it as "an affront to the principles of openness which underpin a modern democracy".The Lords is perhaps the most potent symbol of a closed society. Because we are in the process of building support for a Lords reform package, I am sometimes advised not to be too outspoken on this issue. But I'm afraid this is one boat that urgently needs rocking. Lloyd George described the House of Lords as being "a body of five hundred men chosen at random from amongst the unemployed". To be honest, it might be better if it was. Of course among our peers there are those with valuable experience and expertise. But a veneer of expertise can surely no longer serve as an alibi for a chamber which legislates on behalf of the people – but is not held to account by the people.
He was made redundant at the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in 2004 and acquired a tough reputation chasing insider trading in Hong Kong. Now he's back, let's hope he keeps it up. This was a serious failure of cosy BBA governance – not to mention FSA and Bank of England regulation – in the face of concerns being expressed about Libor's probity. Wheatley's report proposes criminal sanctions. Good again.Far less important in the big numbers end of the business – Libor is at the heart of $300 trillion worth of churning transactions – but more interesting because it affects so many more people directly is the Guardian report (I can't find it elsewhere, even in the banker-bashing Daily Mail) that complaints to banks have grown by nearly two-thirds in the first six months of 2012.
It would be totally wrong for the government to get involved in a competition issue which has to be decided at arms length. However, I do think you, I, Vince and the DPM should meet to discuss the policy issues that are thrown up as a result.Jay said that Hunt had drafted the memo himself, and sent it to Adam Smith for advice.Earlier Smith told the inquiry that he thought Hunt had an open mind about the bid. But Jay put it to him that this memo showed that Hunt was in favour. In reply, Smith said that at this point Hunt did have no objection to the bid.3.56pm: Frédéric Michel's second witness statement is now on the Leveson website (pdf). 3.40pm: Adam Smith is starting his evidence to the Leveson inquiry.
