When is the best time of the year to go to the Grand Canyon
When is the best time of year to go to the Grand Canyon?
The answer depends on what you want to see and what you want to do. There are three main features of the Grand Canyon: 1) South Rim オークリー サングラス; 2) North Rim, and: 3) Inner Canyon/Backcountry paul smith 財布. The National Park Service has some excellent information on the Grand Canyon National Park website for planning a visit オークリー ゴーグル. The South Rim is the most developed and is open year round. The South Rim is at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet. Winters are cold with significant snow. Summers are mild with moderate humidity. From mid-July through mid-September the Canyon experiences occasional monsoonal thunder storms. These thunder storms typically fire up in the afternoon and clear out overnight.
I love it at any time of year because of the changes of the seasons. The best months to visit are probably April and September. The weather and the crowds should be moderate ニューバランス 996.
Most tourists visit between May and August. The weather is moderate. The crowds are heavy. The South Rim handles the crowds fairly well with the Shuttle Bus system. Restaurants and Visitor facilities get crowded ポールスミス バッグ. The hotels book up a year in advance シャネル ピアス.
October ヴィトン バッグ, November and March are some of the best times to visit. Temperatures are cool to cold at night. The crowds are light and the Village and Visitor Center are uncrowded.
December, January and February can be awesome if you can handle the cold weather. I love the snow on the Redwall geological layer of the Canyon. The lodges カルティエ, especially El Tovar Lodge sparkle with holiday decorations and the crowds are very light. The temperatures at night can dip into the subzero Fahrenheit range. Daytimes warm up. This can cause ice problems on some of the walks so you need shoes, cleats or microspikes to handle the icy conditions.
NORTH RIM
The Lodge, General Store and facilities at the North Rim are open from May 15 to October 15. The North Rim closes for the winter and snow closes the roads. The North Rim is at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. It is not as developed as the South Rim, is harder to get to and has fewer tourists than the South Rim. Even though it is about 26 miles directly across from the South Rim to the North Rim, you have to drive about 5 hours and all the way around to get from Rim to Rim.
The best time to visit the North Rim is May 15 to October 15. If you are entirely self-sufficient and don't need the facilities, it can be fun to visit before the Rim opens or after it closes. But you might need a chain saw to clear a few roads or you might have to cross country ski and leave your car until the snow melts in the spring.
INNER CANYON/BACKCOUNTRY
You drop from an elevation of approximately 7 グッチ,000 feet on the South Rim to 1,500 feet at Phantom Ranch. You can dayhike several trails off the South Rim. You cannot stay in the Inner Canyon or in the Backcountry without a Permit from the Backcountry Office.
The Inner Canyon /Backcountry can reach temperatures of over 110 degrees Fahrenheit between mid-May to mid-September. Even though the Colorado River runs through it, most of the Inner Canyon / Backcountry is a desert environment requiring water management skills.
The best months to camp and backpack the Inner Canyon / Backcountry are March and October. But there are many more applications than permits issued. If you have questions about Backcountry permits, I'll answer those in another question ポールスミス.
