But the poll also suggests Mr Osborne might be able to persuade some of the doubters to support scrapping the 50p rate, which applies to earnings above £150,000 a year. Some 56 per cent of people believe its abolition would encourage entrepreneurs to stay in Britain and stimulate growth, while 34 per cent disagree. ? In a letter to the Times (paywall), Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the British Medical Association, as well as the heads of four medical royal colleges and two other professional medical associations publish a letter criticising the health bill. Our organisations believe that the Bill could still potentially destabilise the NHS as we know it. This is despite some positive amendments that the Government made to the legislation.
I normally boycott one-collector shows: They almost always come close to mercenary sycophantism, and this one has moments that come closer than most. But I simply couldn't resist Daily Pic-ing this pair of lacquered sliding doors, marc by marc jacobs tote, which were made by a revered master named Ogawa Haritsu (1663 –1747). The splendor of their trompe-l'oeil craft is obvious, using inlaid metal and ceramic to represent the softness of books. But what especially struck me is the scene's background, whose coarse-grained wood is supposed to read as a neutral support,a no-place that the image simply floats on. And yet that surface that we are not supposed to register – "don't look at me,I'm just planking" – has clearly been as carefully planned and constructed as the fancy "objects" that sit on it.
Just as right-wingers used to say to people like me go live in Moscow,I say to the fire-breathers who think they're living with tyranny and mayhem,go live in Juba. Look it up.Milk, the Other White Fluid This is a still from "Head",a strange video by Cheryl Donegan that's in the show called "1993" at the New Museum in New York. (Click on the image to watch the video.) The piece – surprise, surprise – was made in 1993,and feels like a comic take-off on the "procedural" videos made by conceptual artists two decades earlier. ("Watch me doing something; watch me doing something else.") Here,Donigan seems to sexualize their work, and inject some gender and power issues into their art-about-art premises.
"(7) Free Summer FunWISN,Milwaukee Sure,we all like a little cheap entertainment, especially to keep the kids busy when school’s out for summer. So when Milwaukee’s WISN began its segment on the subject,we thought we’d be getting the ultimate inside scoop of "to dos" for summer. Instead,we got a series of little kids telling us how bored they are and parents suggesting the park as a perfect free summer destination. How enlightening.Star-Spangled Confederates: How Southern Sympathizers Decided Our National Anthem The story of how "The Star-Spangled Banner" became the national anthem in 1931 is the story of a red-white-and-blue culture war. The patriotic song, written by Washington attorney Francis Scott Key,kate spade bags, had been popular ever since it was written in August 1814.
So it is proving. She also says that insiders think Cameron has a problem because Ed Llewellyn, his chief of staff, and Steve Hilton, his policy adviser, are flawed.Critics say that nobody in Downing Street seems able to give shape and coherence to policy. "Ed Llewellyn is meant to be chief of staff, but he's just not cut out for the job," says one insider of the Old Etonian who has worked for Chris Patten and Paddy Ashdown. "He is very low profile and his real expertise is in defence and foreign policy – not domestic issues."Then there's Steve Hilton who has been a key figure in pushing the health reforms. The trouble is he is often seen as being ill-mannered, he has no antennae for those he has to deal with, he gets up the noses of the mandarins – and just about everyone else – and he lacks political nous.
"Now he apparently is,but he was closer to right the first time. I'm for the deal, imperfect as it necessarily is and will be,in part because it also includes other essential steps; it not only saves unemployment benefits, but protects the child tax credit and the earned income tax credit. Without that, marc jacobs outlet, working families at the lower end of the income scale would lose $1,000 next year. And all of us will be the losers if on the way to economic recovery,we plunge or are pushed off the fiscal cliff. Afterward,if Republicans finally come to whatever senses they have left in the recesses of their House caucus, the answer will be very close to what the president has put on the table. But right now the other side is crazed—and yes, crazy too.
4.00pm: Here's an afternoon summary.? Sir John Vickers has criticised the government for watering down the proposals from the Independent Commission on Banking. As Jill Treanor reports, less than an hour after the government published a white paper intended to overhaul the banking sector, Vickers, who chaired the ICB, said the government should have gone further in adopting his committee's proposals to make the banking system safer by "ringfencing" the UKs high street banks from their riskier investment banking arms. He stressed that the tensions in the eurozone meant that the government should press ahead with the proposals, and urged the coalition to resist any further pressure to backtrack.
But it is Grant Bowler (whom I,for one,had never heard of),burdened with small,close-set eyes and a retroussé nose, who I think is faced with the harder task of channeling Burton, with his electric gaze and extraordinary, basso profundo,diction-perfect voice. Perhaps it was because I had only recently been reading Burton's mesmerizing diaries and rewatching him act with Taylor in any number of forgettable vehicles like The VIPs and The Sandpiper, where he still managed to cast a large shadow, that I wanted more of Burton's complex inwardness conveyed than Bowler seems up to. That said,he is good at getting across the heated quality of their intimacy—"We love to fight!" Lohan happily announces—whether it be in the form of snuggled endearments ("I will love you even if you get fat as a hippo") or ripe insults ("That's my gal,the very essence of a frumpy fishwife").
