Sunday, July 22—A state trooper helicopter was launched on a search for a group of overdue hikers who spent a night in the Chugach Mountains after an outing in the neighborhood of O’Malley Peak. The group included four adults and seven children and had been overdue for nearly one day before they were found. The group left a trip plan with a Girdwood woman who expected the party to return about 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, according to a trooper dispatch. The woman reported the overdue hikers at about 10:38 p.m. that day. About 11 a.m. on Sunday the chopper pilot and a park ranger riding on the search spotted the group. Everyone was safe and hiking out, only behind schedule. The trooper and ranger dropped off some water—and no, they won’t do the same with beer.
