Gone are all league standouts safeties William Buford and Jamar Hornsby as well as cornerbacks Adam Lucas and Kevin Phinazee. Those four combined for 18 of 22 Tuskegee's 22 interceptions in last season, a mark good enough for seventh in the country."I'm worried," Slater said flatly in regards to his defensive backfield situation at SIAC Media Day in Atlanta earlier this week. "I think I lost some more of my hair worrying about that. I thought we did a good job in the spring with the guys that we had and then we got some more guys that we recruited that hopefully will be able to come in and help us."The Golden Tigers will likely depend on former high school school All-American, rising junior Dee Finley to anchor the defensive back field along with returner Chevin Meadows. "And it's guys who were waiting behind Derrick last season who were waiting to get that chance, and watching Derrick and learning from him. So, we'll definitely surprise people if they're not expecting us to have a running game."
