The biggest strengths of Tuskegee's 2012 team, which went 10-2, winning a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title and earned a trip to the Pioneer Bowl, was its running game and its defense. Those also happen to be two of the biggest concerns for head coach Willie Slater, heading into the 2013 season.Gone is former Missouri transfer running back Derrick Washington, who rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 14 touchdowns on his way to being named SIAC Player of the Year and a candidate fro the Harlon Hill trophy award, the Division II equivalent to Heisman. Gone are all league standouts safeties William Buford and Jamar Hornsby as well as cornerbacks Adam Lucas and Kevin Phinazee. Those four combined for 18 of 22 Tuskegee's 22 interceptions in last season, a mark good enough for seventh in the country."I'm worried," Slater said flatly in regards to his defensive backfield situation at SIAC Media Day in Atlanta earlier this week. "I think I lost some more of my hair worrying about that. I thought we did a good job in the spring with the guys that we had and then we got some more guys that we recruited that hopefully will be able to come in and help us."The Golden Tigers will likely depend on former high school school All-American, rising junior Dee Finley to anchor the defensive back field along with returner Chevin Meadows. They also signed former Lincoln standout T.J. Truss, an athlete with extensive experience in the secondary at the prep level. Slater, a 30-year veteran of the profession,
Magna also picks up Selena Gomez, referred to Washington as the best running back he's ever coached.Expect Michael J. Thornton, a second-team preseason all-conference pick,
300 pounds, to get his fair share of carries this season. The 6-foot-2, 230-pounder, played most at fullback in 2012 when he rushed for 439 yards and eight touchdowns on 64 carries but has the fleetness of foot to be a feature back. Tuskegee will also welcome three freshman running backs into the fold, a group headlined by former Decatur standout Joshua Matthews (5-10, 218), Keith product Demarquis Lumpkin (5-11, 225) and Timonte King (5-8, 230) of Oakland Park, Fla.Fortunately, for Slater, whose team was picked to repeat as league champions, they have an experienced offensive line coming back, including first-team preseason all-league choices Devonte Jones and Christopher Tolbert. They also have two viable options in at quarterback in returning starter Justin Nared and Alabama State transfer Rashard Burkette and the entire wide receiver corps is back.'We have a couple of guys, coming in that I know for a fact will make an instant impact," Burkette said. "And it's guys who were waiting behind Derrick last season who were waiting to get that chance, and watching Derrick and learning from him. So, we'll definitely surprise people if they're not expecting us to have a running game."
