?According to estimates by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, for 2013 sequestration would result in a 10 percent reduction in spending caps on new appropriations for discretionary defense programs; 7.8 percent for nondefense programs; 10 percent in mandatory budgetary resources for nonexempt defense programs; 2 percent in most Medicare spending; 7.8 percent in mandatory budgetary resources for other nonexempt nondefense programs and activities; along with associated reductions in debt-service costs since less money would have to be borrowed. Totals savings would be about $85 billion for the year. But as CBO points out, it will ultimately be up to the White House to decide precisely how the cuts will be enacted, so that estimate could be off.
