She recently spoke to The Gardens about what she will bring as a Tastemaker at Antiques at The Gardens,
When we asked them which samples they preferred, October 3 - 6.Birmingham Botanical Gardens:Howdid your path evolve from and Art History major at Alabama to your current interest and business with antique rugs and rug restoration?Paige Albright:I worked in the design industry for many years before moving to Birmingham. I was introduced to Alice Schleusner, local rug guru, and worked with her at her oriental rug shop for many years. She is very passionate and knowledgeable. Oriental rugs are an entirely unique art form and a study within themselves. It was fascinating! As well as a very natural fit with my art history background. The very basic essential of rug knowledge is studying geography and history. Different regions and areas express their artwork through weaving. Each area hasindividual techniques and trademarksthat set them apart. Every time I travel to market, I learn something new. It is fun and exciting working with all different types of rugs. Rug restoration is something that comes along with rug retail. It is a necessary part in maintaining your carpet in good condition for value as well as day to day use.BBG: How did you develop your ability to determine a rug's worth so easily?PA:I wouldn't say that determining a rug's worth is easy. It is subjective to many external factors. Mainly age,
gen11983, size and condition but mostly to current market trends. Classical rugs never go out of style. There are subtle differences in weaves andpatterns that help distinguish and identify different types. For example some Turkish Oushaks have a red weft which date the piece to pre-1920. Of course there are exceptions to almost every rule which keeps identification challenging and fun.BBG: If I have simple hardwoods,
No. 12 at 5-3 in Div. II, what can make an antique rug a valuable addition to my room?PA:Oriental rugs give pattern and color to a space; warming up the entire area. They have the ability to bring life to a room and pull everything together. They balance other pieces of artwork,
coach outlet store online, color and fabrics. They should alsoenhance othercollections. They are unique and should be appreciated for their own qualitiesas individual pieces of art. BBG: What is the worst condition you have been able to bring a rug back to life from?PA:Wow! We have seen a lot of crazy things. We have taken a well worn wide piece and cut out the wear to create a useable, however smaller runner at a fraction of the cost of restoration. We have also taken a forgotten oversized oushak that had large holes and rewoven the entire piece. We restored it back to its original condition and it became useable once again. Lots of times clients have pets who have chewed areas that we have rewoven and made whole again. Sometimes itis a minor repair that makes a major impact. Most everything can be repaired. It is often just a matter of how extensive the work and how large the budget.BBG: What are your own favorite pieces? What would you include in your own home?PA:I love lots of different types of rugs. I have a variedcollection from antique Persians to oushaks. Some are family pieces that I have inherited. Others are smaller collectible pieces that were so unique that I couldn't live without! For example I fell in love with a small tulu and didn't have a spoton the floor so I draped itover a table.A few spaces I just wanted something fun and "now." I put a wild overdyed citrus piece in my master bedroom for a pop to freshen up the space and not be so serious in every room. Rugs are something to beappreciated and collected. Have fun and enjoy the search for the perfect piece. To learn more about this year's show and to purchase tickets online, visit.
