The Dell Inspiron 14 is a 14-inch screen portable laptop built for those on a budget. It's not the most powerful, best built or slickest looking portable laptop out there, but it's price to feature set makes it attractive and Dell's flexible online configuration means you can build the Inspiron 14 to suit your costs and needs. This Dell Inspiron 14 reviewed here is the latest Inspiron 1440 model marketed on the Dell website as just the plain old Inspiron 14. This review will cover the pros and cons for the Inspiron 1440 when used as a student notebook.
Design
The design of the Inspiron 14 hasn't changed much in the last year since Dell released the Inspiron 14, Inspiron 14z and Studio 14z laptops. As mentioned in the specifications above, our review unit comes with the newer Intel Core i3 330M dual core processor. We're calling this laptop the "Inspiron 14" in our review, but it's worth mentioning that Dell markets  michael kors pursue outlet this system as the "Inspiron 14" as well as the "Inspiron 1464." You can also find this system selling on the Dell website under the older configuration name "Inspiron 1440" with older Intel processors. Of course, there's also the Inspiron 14z (also called the Inspiron 1470) that uses the Intel CULV processors for extended battery life. Are you confused yet? We  oulet michael kors sure are.
Moving beyond the superfluous model names for essentially the same laptop, the Inspiron 14 looks like an average budget notebook with a 14-inch display. The plastic construction, average screen resolution, and lack of a backlit keyboard certainly don't give this laptop the same premium look and feel as the Dell Studio 14z. You might think that the palmrests and area surrounding the keyboard are made of metal at first glance, but upon closer examination you'll find that it's just plastic with a fancy metallic finish. The Inspiron 14 feels reasonably durable despite the fact that the notebook chassis is constructed from relatively thin plastics. The touchpad and palmrests suffer from flexible plastics as does the keyboard itself. The working surface of the laptop essentially bends under heavy pressure, so durability wasn't the main focus for the designers. The screen lid also suffers from thin plastics and if you press on the lid with your fingers while the laptop is on you will create screen distortions.
When closed the Inspiron 14 looks relatively thin compared to budget laptops from several years ago, but the weight of the 6-cell battery makes this system a bit too heavy to qualify for the "thin and light" category today. The "Promise Pink" screen lid gives the Inspiron a nice candy-covered look, but Dell charges a $40 premium for the privilege of selecting pink instead of black. On a more positive note, Dell donates $5 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every pink Inspiron 14 that they sell. Sure, $40 is a little excessive for just sticking a chuck of colored plastic on a notebook, but it's nice to know that your purchase is helping a good cause. The bottom of the notebook features the battery and single access plate for the RAM and wireless card. Removing the hard drive requires more in depth disassembly. There isn't much to talk about here other than to briefly mention the location of the two speakers on the bottom of the front edge (more on that later). The bottom of the Inspiron 14 likewise suffers from the same flexible plastics mentioned previously in the review. You won't notice it if you aren't squeezing the laptop, but if you're running to a class or a business meeting with the laptop in your hands you might feel it "bending" under the pressure from your fingers. In short, the Dell Inspiron 14 looks cool and is probably durable enough for desktop replacement work, but the heavy use of thin plastics certainly doesn't help the laptop feel as durable as it could be.
Features
The Inspiron i1464-4382OBK features a 14.1-inch, LED-backlit LCD display. The LEDs produce a bright image, and they are more energy-efficient than the traditional fluorescent lamps used in LCDs. The screen features a 1366-by-768 native resolution, which is standard for 14.1-inch display. It's also the same resolution that you'll typically find on larger 15.6-inch laptops; compared with those models with that resolution,  Michael Korss Site text, and icons appear a bit smaller on the Inspiron i1464-4382OBK. We found Web pages and Word docs to be quite legible, but those with less than 20/20 vision might want to consider a 15.6-inch laptop instead. The larger screen size also gives a bit more cinematic feel to movies, but we enjoyed the visual experience the Inspiron i1464-4382OBK provides as an entertainment device.
Aiding the enjoyment of movies-and music-is the Inspiron i1464-4382OBK's audio subsystem. Featuring SRS Premium Sound, the laptop's two integrated stereo speakers produce loud and clear sound. It rivals the sound of larger 17.3-inch modelsthat come equipped with a small subwoofer. With just two speakers, the Inspiron i1464-4382OBK surprised and impressed us with its relatively huge sound. This is a laptop that you may use to listen to an album here or there without plugging in an external set or speakers or your headphones.
You can connect the laptop to an external display, using either VGA or HDMI. Other connections on board include three USB 2.0 ports, a media card reader, and an Ethernet jack. You won't find an eSATA port, which is an increasingly common connection on laptops, and an ExpressCard slot is also missing. An 802.11n antenna handles your Wi-Fi needs.
A Web cam sits above the display, and Dell includes a facial-recognition app that you can use in lieu of a password to log on to the system. It's of dubious value, but it is fun to play around with. Lastly, the laptop features a roomy 500GB hard drive. It's one notch larger than the 320GB hard drive found in many laptops at this price, such as the HP dv4-2153cl. The Dell's drive is also a lot less cluttered with bloatware-annoying software trials and offers and shortcuts-than  michael kors purse outlet online the HP models.
Keyboard
The Inspiron 14 keyboard is full sized and what you'd be used to with a desktop keyboard. The keys on the Inspiron 14 are flat and somewhat cheap feeling, there isn't much springiness to them and the key press travel distance is short. Because of this I wouldn't call the feel of pushing a key very satisfying. That said, the keyboard is firm and does not suffer from sponginess or flexing that you often find in cheaper laptops. Overall the keyboard feel is fine and if you're not picky (like I am) then nothing about this keyboard will bother you.
One of the more interesting features of the keyboard is that F1 - F12 keys in the top row function first and foremost as media buttons, just like they do with an Apple Mac computer. For instance, you hit F11 key for Play, F8 key for volume down, F9 key for volume up, F4 key for screen brightness down and F5 key for screen brightness up. While this is convenient, it has the problematic side effect of forcing keyboard junkies to hold down the "Fn" key plus desired Function button to perform that buttons typical "normal" operation. So for those PC users who like to use keyboard shortcuts such as F5 to refresh a browser (a very popular keyboard shortcut) they are forced to hold down the "Fn" key plus "F5", and that's almost impossible to do without removing your hands from the typing position. Depending on who you are you may or may not like this, and if you've ever used a Mac before you are probably already familiar with this keyboard functionality.
Screen and Speakers
The 14-inch high-definition (1366 x 768) panel on the Dell Inspiron 14 isn't quite as nice as the vibrant 1600 x 900 screen used on our review unit of the Studio 14z. The colors on this screen are generally good but contrast wasn't as impressive. The LED backlighting in our review unit is pretty even and offers a range of brightness settings. Honestly, since all 11-inch notebooks/netbooks come with 1366 x 768 resolution displays we feel it's time to make 1600 x 900 the "minimum" resolution of 14-inch notebooks. Horizontal viewing angles are extremely good, so you won't have any trouble sharing a movie with the person sitting next to you on a plane. Vertical viewing angles are average or below average with colors quickly washing out when viewed from above and colors begining to distort and invert as you move the screen back.
Once again, the stereo speakers on the Inspiron 14 class of notebooks failed to impress me. The stereo speakers produce average sound quality and are located beneath the front edge of the notebook palmrests firing downward at your lap. I usually call this type of audio "crotch speakers" because the speakers aren't pointed up toward the user. If you're using the Inspiron 14 on a desk then the audio from the speakers "bounces" off the hard desk surface and it sounds okay, but if you're using this PC as a "laptop" then the sound is going to be muffled.
Performance
We didn't have an opportunity to benchmark the pre-production unit of the Inspiron 14, but Dell made it very clear that this notebook is aimed at students who want a good laptop for general use at an affordable price and don't need all of the features found on the more expensive Studio 14z. For example, the Inspiron 14 lacks FireWire and eSATA and the starting price only includes Intel integrated graphics. On the other hand, the optional 1600 x 900 screen, optional Blu-ray drive, and optional ATI discrete graphics give the Inspiron 14 some impressive bang for the buck.
This is where the  michael cores outlet online $449 starting price of the Inspiron 14 looks extremely impressive compared to the $649 starting price of the Studio 14z. Sure, the starting price of the Studio 14z includes a better processor, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics and a better selection of ports, but the Inspiron 14 still offers a built-in optical drive and dedicated 7-in-1 media card reader. Bottom line, back-to-school shoppers are going to have two very impressive options from Dell this year.
In terms of additional features, the Inspiron 14, like  michael cores outlet the Studio 14z, will offer FailSafe theft prevention: an option that helps protect your personal data in the event that your laptop is missing or stolen. With Failsafe engaged, you can track network information and the ISP location of your laptop when it connects to the Internet, and you can remotely erase selected files and render the laptop unusable until the rightful owner unlocks it.
Unlike the Studio 14z, at the time of launch the Inspiron 14 won't offer optional built-in mobile broadband wireless cards to allow you to stay connected to the Internet even when you're away from a Wi-Fi connection. However, the Inspiron 14 does come with Dell Remote Access; the optional premium version of which allows people to access content via their home network of personal computing devices including desktops, laptops, ultra-mobile devices, smart phones and web cameras.
