In Path of Exile 2, the new Runeforging system is a massive game-changer for gear progression, but there is a huge catch: it is entirely possible to miss it. Unlike main story elements, the progression for Verisium Runeforging and Runes of Aldur is tied to a series of optional side quests given by a new NPC named Farrow across Acts 1 through 4. Because the user interface doesn't give you a friendly reminder or hand-hold you through these steps, missing a single one of these side quests means you completely lock yourself out of that specific crafting tier.

If you want to ensure your character is fully geared and ready for the endgame, here is a complete breakdown of how to unlock every single tier of Runeforging, act by act.

Act 1: Armor Runeforging and Runesmithing
Your journey begins right in the first act. You will want to look for Farrow in the Clearfell Camp. He will offer a side quest called "The Runeseeker."

To complete it, you need to track down three distinct Runestone sites spread across the act. Keep a sharp eye out when you reach the Orham Farmlands, as the third and final stone is tucked away carefully in this area. Once you have it, you will head into the Grelwood with Farrow. This unlocks the hidden Lost Catacombs located beneath the Tree of Souls, ultimately granting you access to the Runic Vault.

Completing this quest awards you two major systems:

The Verisium Anvil: This allows you to add a defensive layer called Runic Ward to your non-unique armor pieces. To do this, you will use Verisium metal, which you harvest from Remnant encounters.

Runesmithing: This unlocks the ability to interact with the large Remnants you find out in the world. By using your socketed runes, you can actually customize and select specific monster wave rewards.

Act 2: Runic Alloys
Once you make it to Act 2, find Farrow again inside the main town hub to pick up his second questline.

This step requires you to venture into the Bone Pits. Your goal here is to explore the area thoroughly to unearth hidden rune stones and locate a preserved witness. It is a relatively straightforward delve compared to later acts, but absolutely mandatory.

Completing this leg of the quest unlocks 13 Runic Alloy Currencies. These specialized alloys will start dropping from your Remnant encounters. They are vital intermediate-tier crafting materials used to modify and upgrade your mid-game equipment.

Act 3: Unique Verisium Runeforging
Act 3 features the easiest place to accidentally break your progression chain. You need to track Farrow down at a location called the Mystic Refuge.

The danger here is that the Mystic Refuge is hidden deep within the sprawling Act 3 jungle layout, an area completely off the critical story path. If you just rush through the main campaign objectives and do not actively explore the jungle to find this refuge, you will bypass this entire mechanic for your character.

Finding Farrow here unlocks incredibly powerful features:

Unique Base Upgrading: Your Verisium Anvil gets a massive upgrade, allowing you to transform low-level Unique items (level 55 or lower) into higher base item types. This scales up their physical damage or base defenses while adding Runic Ward, meaning those awesome leveling uniques you found early on can actually stay viable well into endgame maps.

Kalguuran Unique Reforging: You gain the specific ability to reforge Kalguuran-themed weapons.

Act 4: Ancient Runes and the Complete Recipe Matrix
The final piece of Farrow's narrative quest takes place among the islands of Ngamakanui.

For this step, you must complete an optional logbook side quest found at Plunderer's Point. A quick word of warning to avoid buggy quest states or accidentally deleting your inventory progression: make sure to turn your quest items in early to the lady in Nkagunu, or use the second ship available at the very end of the act.

Finishing this final story beat unlocks the pinnacle of the campaign crafting system:

13 Ancient Runes: These are powerful, endgame-tier weapon runes that apply massive, weapon-type-specific global bonuses to your build.

Advanced Base Upgrades: This gives you access to the endgame-relevant unique runeforging blueprints.

Advanced Endgame Recipes: Going Beyond the Campaign
It is worth noting that while finishing the campaign acts unlocks the foundational functions of your crafting bench, it won't just hand you every individual item recipe.

To discover the highly specialized, advanced recipes—like specific weapon or jewelry runeforging knowledge—you will need to take your character into the mapping endgame. While running Expedition Maps, keep an eye out for opportunities to detonate red flags. Doing so can unlock hidden underground subareas, such as the Hidden Aquifer. If you clear out these explosive encounters, you will find specialized lore altars waiting for you. Interacting with these altars is the secret to uncovering the rest of the game's hidden crafting knowledge.
