Friday's game was the fourth in a series of tight matchups between the two squads. The Rams won on a Tempe missed field goal three years ago, earned an overtime victory two years ago on a game-ending interception in the end zone, and effectively knocked Tempe out of the playoffs with last season's 34-17 victory.
Haines and Skagway mayors Stan Selmer and Stephanie Scott shake hands at the Mayor’s Cup golf tournament. Haines and Skagway golfers faced off in the competition, held Saturday, Aug. 17, at Valley of the Eagles golf course in Haines. Fourteen players on each team each played 27 holes. Haines won 20 out of the 21 matches, winning the cup. The tournament is fashioned after the Ryder Cup, a competition pitting U.S. golfers against ones from Europe. Organizer Brian Elliott said the tournament enjoyed “tremendous support from the community,” including prizes of golf equipment, gift certificates to local businesses, and clothing. Local grocery stores provided meals and Andrew Rex of the Deshu supplied sockeye salmon. Elliott hopes to expand the tournament to include other Southeast communities in future years.
